Laser welding helmet
Question: Are laser safety goggles sufficient as personal protective equipment for manual laser welding?

Facts: the Real Decreto 486/2010 of 23 April 2010 on the protection of the health and safety of workers against risks related to exposure to artificial optical radiation stipulates that the exposure limit values for artificial optical radiation for workers must not be exceeded. This applies to both eyes and skin. Measures must be taken to ensure that these limit values are never exceeded.

During soldering or welding with handheld lasers, the laser operator is exposed to very high laser power densities, which are emitted into the environment in the form of stray light from the welding process. Depending on the metal to be welded, the geometry of the workpiece and the position and angle of the welding laser with respect to the workpiece, it is unfortunately necessary to consider worst-case scenarios where laser power densities exceed "normal" stray light by many orders of magnitude. Maximum allowable irradiance levels for both eyes and skin are exceeded.

Answer: laser safety goggles alone are not sufficient for safe protection against laser radiation during manual laser welding! The face must be fully protected by a laser welding helmet. Naturally, this complete protection also applies to the hands (laser safety gloves) and other parts of the body (no freely accessible skin areas).

At ProCareLight we have a wide range of laser welding face shields (helmets, facial masks) and traditional laser welding helmets from leading European manufacturers. Our LasWeld family of face protection.

These models of laser welding protection helmets are also certified for traditional welding (different protection depending on the model).

In the upper button “Download File” you can download the complete list of laser welding face shields, our LasWeld range of laser soldering helmets, and facial protections.

And don't forget to consult our laser protective clothing catalog.

We have laser protection clothing that is also suitable for protection against traditional welding. Laser protection gloves are almost mandatory for manual laser welding.

Another answer: no, of course, traditional welding helmets are NOT valid for laser welding. There must be a special laser protection filter in the welding faceshields, as the LasWeld ones have,

As laser safety experts, at PCL we know the right products better than anyone else and we are the distributors of leading manufacturers of PPE and laser protection such as Protect Laserschutz, Laservision or Univet. We have the best catalog to be able to offer you what you really need.
